Initially, I wanted to continue with the idea I had for the first documentary and try to capture the pockets in a college student’s life that may showcase the tensions between being a child and being an adult. For my initial doc, I used stuffed animals to signify holding onto one’s childhood in times of hardships as adults, and reverting back to the safety and security of stuffed animals. For this documentary, however, I am not entirely sure that that is the image I want to carry forward.
While I still want to focus on the unnoticed tensions between two seemingly contrasting things- childhood and adulthood all in one person- I think I want to move away from a broader idea of a college student and speak on something more specific to myself. I think the tensions between craving the safety of your childhood home and parents, and establishing your own home and life is especially heightened for international students. While we may carry this more easily on most days, times like the holidays meant to be spent with family, such as Thanksgiving break can be particularly difficult. I want to show the nuances of the emotions through my own experiences over break.
